1. Do Austrian Citizens Need a Visa for Vietnam?
Yes, absolutely. There is a common misconception among Austrian travelers who assume they have the same 45-day visa-free privilege as neighboring Germany. This is false. Austria is NOT on Vietnam's unilateral visa exemption list.
Austrian passport holders must apply for a 90-Day Electronic Visa (e-Visa) prior to their departure, regardless of whether they stay for 5 days or 90 days.
Dual Citizenship Strategy
If you hold dual citizenship (e.g., Austria and Germany), we strongly recommend entering Vietnam using your German passport. This will automatically grant you a 45-day visa waiver for free, completely bypassing the need for an e-Visa.
2. CRITICAL: Handling Umlauts (ä, ö, ü) & Eszett (ß)
The single biggest reason Austrian applications are rejected is due to special characters. The Vietnamese immigration system uses standard English alphabets and will reject applications containing German special characters.
How to format your name correctly:
You must copy your name EXACTLY as it appears in the Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) at the bottom of your passport photo page (the two lines with <<< characters).
- ä becomes AE
- ö becomes OE
- ü becomes UE
- ß becomes SS
- Example: If your name is "Müller, Groß", the MRZ will show "MUELLER" and "GROSS". You must enter MUELLER and GROSS into the application form.
Note on Academic Titles: Do NOT include titles like "Mag.", "Dr.", or "Prof." in your visa application, even if they are printed on your passport. Only enter your given names and surnames.
3. How to Apply for the e-Visa
The process is 100% online. You do not need to visit the Vietnamese Embassy in Vienna.
- Take a clear digital photo of your passport data page and a portrait photo (white background, no glasses).
- Fill out the Online Application Form. Double-check your spelling against the MRZ!
- Pay the service fee securely online using Visa or Mastercard.
Processing Time: It typically takes 3-4 working days. Print two copies of the approved PDF visa before your flight.
4. Flight Routes: Vienna to Vietnam
Vienna International Airport (VIE) offers excellent connections to Vietnam. There are currently no direct flights, but 1-stop options are very convenient:
| Airline | Route | Transit Hub | Flight Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qatar Airways | VIE → DOH → HAN/SGN | Doha | ~14-16 Hours. Very fast connection times. |
| Emirates | VIE → DXB → HAN/SGN | Dubai | ~15-17 Hours. Excellent service and A380 routes. |
| Austrian Airlines / EVA Air | VIE → BKK → HAN/SGN | Bangkok | Connect in Bangkok, then take a short 2-hour flight to Vietnam. |
5. Local Tips: E-Card, ÖAMTC & Plugs
🏥 Your E-Card is Invalid
Warning: The Austrian European Health Insurance Card (E-Card) is NOT valid in Vietnam. You must purchase a comprehensive private travel insurance policy (e.g., through ÖAMTC or Europäische Reiseversicherung) that covers medical evacuation.
🛵 Renting a Scooter (ÖAMTC)
Your standard Austrian pink/card driving license is illegal to use on its own in Vietnam. You MUST obtain a 1968 International Driving Permit (IDP) from ÖAMTC or ARBÖ before you fly. You also need an active Category A (Motorcycle) endorsement.
🔌 Plugs & Voltage
Great News: Austria and Vietnam both use 220V-230V. Furthermore, your standard Austrian Type C (Europlug) will fit perfectly into almost all Vietnamese wall sockets without an adapter! For thick Type F (Schuko) plugs, a simple adapter might occasionally be needed.
💶 Currency (EUR vs USD)
You do not need to buy US Dollars in Austria. Euro banknotes (€50 and €100) are widely accepted and can be exchanged easily at local gold shops in Vietnam for excellent rates. Ensure bills are crisp.
Frequently Asked Questions for Austrian Citizens
The Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in Austria is located at Felix-Mottl-Straße 20, 1190 Vienna (Wien). However, for standard tourism, applying for an e-Visa online is much faster and cheaper than visiting the embassy in person.
If you typed "Müller" instead of "MUELLER" and the visa was already submitted, it will likely be rejected or you will receive an "Amendment Request" from immigration. If the visa is rejected outright, you will have to submit a brand new application and pay the government fee again.
Not recommended. The old "Visa on Arrival" letter system is outdated and often causes delays at the airport. The e-Visa is the official, fastest, and most secure method to enter Vietnam.
The only exception is Phu Quoc Island. If you fly directly to Phu Quoc from an international airport (e.g., VIE -> DOH -> BKK -> PQC) and do not visit mainland Vietnam, you can stay on the island visa-free for 30 days.
Yes. Airline staff at Vienna International Airport will check for a printed copy before allowing you to board. Immigration officers in Vietnam also require a physical paper copy.
